History of My Mother

The following post is authored by Paula Menezes. Paula lives and works to fight Pulmonary Hypertension in Brazil. Her post is a reminder that we are racing together to battle a global disease. The following is provided by Paula in both Portuguese and English.

My mom was diagnosed [with PH] in January 2005. Before this, we went from specialist to specialist for over a year. We got a lot of different diagnoses: asthma, emphysema, psychological issues, and even excessive sunburn (instead of realizing she had dark skin because of the cyanosis, doctors asked us to put black-out over the windows).

At that time, PH was even more unknown than it is now. We didn’t know anyone who had the disease, and the only information source I had was Google, which told us she was going to die in two years, eight months.

Google … told us she was going to die in two years, eight months.

So, we started searching tirelessly for a treatment. In June, the doctors finally found the cause of her PH: scleroderma. We were very happy with the news, because we (mistakenly) thought that once we knew the cause, treating her PH would be easier. We simply didn’t realize that PH secondary to scleroderma is one of the worst types.

After one year, we hadn’t noticed a change, and the doctor confirmed that the treatment wasn’t helping. She prescribed a new medication that cost US$4,000/month (in Brazil, our minimum salary is US$260). My father bought it out-of-pocket for two months, but in the third, he asked me to help, as I was in my last year of law school. I filed a lawsuit against the government and my father founded Abraf (Brazilian PH Association). The government still tried to deny us coverage of the medication, but finally we got a positive ruling. That was a joyful day. We hadn’t told my mother it was the day of the ruling, because we didn’t want to make her nervous and harm her health. I had run from school to court, which also made me late in visiting her at the hospital. She started calling me, a little angry, but I didn’t answer because I was very nervous and about to cry. I felt like my mother’s life was in my hands. I was with my father and my brother, hand in hand, waiting for the decision; when I heard “provided,” my heart sped up. It was the biggest victory of my life.

I ran to the hospital. I didn’t even call her, because I wanted to tell her in person. When I entered the room, I said, “Hey Grumpy, I was late because I went to see your ruling. We got the medication, mom!” What a feeling. It’s been almost 10 years and I still cry when I remember her happy and emotional face that day.

We got the medication, mom!

Infelizmente, 1 ano depois, em 09/08/07, ela faleceu. O Google tinha dado o prognóstico certo: 2 anos e 8 meses.

Unfortunately, one year later, on 08/09/07, she passed away. Google had given us the right prognosis: two years and eight months. With her death, my life lost its color. But I decided to carry with me and spread around the world what she had best: her optimism and happiness.

I continued in Abraf. Since then, we have organized five national events and one international; I have represented Brazil in various conferences; we have gained much ground (but still far from what we need) with the government and now we have over 400 members in Abraf. Now I’m both president of Abraf and vice-president of the Sociedad Latina de Hipertension Pulmonar (Latin PH Society). I’m also part of the group that created and updates the website HPaqui.

Without doubt, what a wonderful mission my loving mother left me.
